What is Nenju

Nenju is the name of prayer beads that are used in Japanese Buddhism. Prayer beads were originated in India in B.C. and transmitted to Japan throughout China with Buddhism at the beginning of the 6th century. After prayer beads were introduced into Japan, different forms of nenju were born for every eight sects in Japan and nenju were spread from nobilities to people in general. Japanese Buddhists believe that for each person should have at least one nenju. Nenju is one of the most important items for the spiritual culture that including teachings of Zen in Japan.

The reason why nenju makers are gathered in Kyoto are because there are many head temples and Nishijin fabric industries that are making threads of nenju with the rest of fabrics, and bead processing factories with high techniques are gathered in the surrounding Kyoto.
